Individual Medals – 76 Golds, 51 Silvers, 35 Bronze
Relays – 4 Golds, 2 Silvers, 4 Bronze
Championship Records: 25, Club Records: 19
On Sunday 15th of September a team of 43 Marlins Masters swimmers ventured to the Pavilions in the Park in Horsham for the 2019 Sussex Masters County Championships.
Inspired by the Marlins junior swimmers winning every age group in their County Championships earlier in the year, the Masters entered a record number of swimmers from a single club in the history of the Championships – a signal of intent, and a clear indicator of the depth of the Masters section of the club.
If the number of entries was an indicator of the depth of Marlins Masters, then the results of the individual events was evidence of the strength within that depth. From 203 individual events Marlins swimmers came away with a combined 76 Gold, 51 Silver and 34 Bronze medals.
In addition to the medals, Marlins swimmers came away with a total of 25 new Championship records, congratulations to: Alison Gwynn (6), Anthony Gimson (2), Coral Wallis, Glenise Buck (2), Jennifer Dean (4), Judith Mckerchar (2), Kathy Bidnall, Linda Hooker, Lisa Mills, Sarah Dennis (2), Teresa Stringer (2) and Tim Frazer.
The Marlins Masters Club Records were tumbling too, with 19 new records set at the meet, congratulations to: Coral Wallis (400m Freestyle), Glenise Buck (50m Butterfly, 50m and 100m Breaststroke), Jennifer Dean (50m Freestyle and 100m IM), Laura Howson (50m Freestyle and Backstroke, 50m and 100m Breaststroke and 100m IM), Linda Hooker (100m Breaststroke), Richard Sambrook (100m Backstroke and IM), Rose Dudeney (100m Breaststroke), Rose Stride (50m Breaststroke and 200m IM), Sarah Dennis (200m and 400m Freestyle).
The team points tally left no question that Marlins Masters dominated the event, despite a strong challenge from Hastings Seagulls – winner of the Top Club trophy for the last two years since its introduction. The final standings:
- Mid Sussex Marlins SC 1429 points
- Hastings Seagull SC 1180.5 points
- Brighton Dolphin SC 842 points
To round off the day, Mid Sussex also won the Relay shield to complete a very successful County Championships for the club.
