Mid Sussex Marlins are the Sussex County Championships and Age Group Competition 2018 winners (and relay champs as well!).
This is a fantastic result for the club! From all our swimmers who stepped up on those blocks and swam for glory, to all those who supported the Club by getting the swimmers to events, the volunteers who tirelessly worked behind the scenes and the teachers and coaches who planned the sets and training sessions. It was a very exciting Championship, with great swimming by all who took part and trained hard for these days. It takes a lot of effort and commitment to get to this stage and it all starts with teaching groups, progressing through the development and training groups and fine tuning within the squads. A big shout out to all the swimmers, parents, grandparents, aunties, uncles, helpers, swim teachers, coaches and volunteers who all played their part. Well done all of you. You should be proud of your achievement. Les Hawkey – Chair, Mid Sussex Marlins
The Sussex County Championships took place over 6 days – including the relay competition, distance events and two full weekends of racing. This year Mid Sussex Marlins had our highest number of swimmers entering, with around 85 qualifiers, as well as 74 actual entries. The depth of our squad was shown in the relay event, where we were able to field two teams in every age group and although the points from the relay day did not contribute to the overall points table, Mid Sussex Marlins won the relay trophy gala convincingly, for a second year in a row.
The distance events day marked the official start of the Sussex County Championships and we got a off to a great start with Gold medals in both the Senior and Junior Championship 800m events and, medals/placing all the way up from the 13 year to 17 year age group.
Saturday the 10th February saw the first full weekend of racing kick off and Mid Sussex Marlins swimmers led from the start. There were so many great performances and improvements from out team but here are some of highlights showing what Mid Sussex Marlins had achieved by the end of the Championship:
- 6 new County record’s
- 138 medals as well as medals for junior and senior championship events
- 40 swims in one final session alone!
- 1st place overall in the age group Championship, winning by a clear 208 points over the next closest team
- 1st place overall in the Championship events (points from top 8 placing’s in junior, under 16’s and seniors – 16 over)
Coaches comments: Nic Piper highlighted how every swimmer that attended did themselves and the club proud. Stephen Murphy summarised the team performance stating that the swimmers had exceeded expectations, raced well over long days and really earned the reward and title of County Champions.
Mid Sussex Marlins now hope to move forward and build on this success for the remainder of the season moving towards Sussex League, Regional and National Championships.
