A storming show from Masters in Swansea

A thirteen-person team of Mid Sussex Masters Marlins stormed the Great Britain championships at Swansea over the weekend of 14th June.

The top highlight was the 280+ years freestyle relay team of Alison Gwynn, Jennifer Dean, Mary Johnson and Sally Mills, breaking their own British record in the 800m and the 400m freestyle relay, with the latter a WORLD record. This team won gold too in the 200m freestyle and medley relays.  Other gold relay winners were Diane Braid, Rose Dudeney, Ann Gale and Jill Rocky in 240+ 200m relay; and the 240+ 400m relay team of Diane Braid, Teresa Stringer, Ann Gale, Jill Rocky. Magic total of medals in relays of 6 golds, with silver and 2 bronzes.

Marlins Masters ladies have strong backstroke talent, pity there are no backstroke relays.  In the 100m backstroke, Kathy excelled her time, winning silver in her age group; Ann Gale was a strong 5th, Victoria Davies, 5th, Mary Johnson 2nd.  Unstoppable star Alison Gwynn, with records in the relays won 4 individual golds in 50 and 100m f/c and b/c. Record holder Sally Mills, top of her age group still managed to take gold for 100m fly.

Other medallists were Teresa Stringer (200m breaststroke, 800m freestyle and 100m breaststroke, bronze); Sally Mills, (200m fly), silver and (50m fly), bronze; Mary Johnson, (50m backstroke) bronze; Kathy Bidnall, (100m and 200m backstroke) silver; Victoria Davies, bronze (50m backstroke); Rose Dudeney, gold, (800m, 400m, 200m freestyle, silver 50m breaststroke).

Club records went to Lisa Mills, (200m breaststroke), Rose Dudeney (200m backstroke), Alison Gwynn (1st leg of the 200m freestyle relay) and 100m backstroke.

Total of individual medals 8 gold, 7 silver and 6 bronze.

Mid Sussex Marlins Masters came 8th overall in the GBs, an outstanding result for a small club, short of men and younger age groups.
