Roll up, roll up – the Sussex League Finale results

Wow what a night we had last night; it was the climax of the Sussex League Divisions 1 and 2 on Saturday 10th June 2019.  Going into the finals our A team topped Division 1 and our B team led Division 2.  As a club that has been breaking boundaries for several years now we had the chance to do something that no team in Sussex has ever done. That is win both Sussex League Divisions. So the pressure was on.  This meant Mid Sussex Marlins were also hosting BOTH finals!

Our A team were at the Triangle and they were against strong opposition in Atlantis A and Brighton.   Our B team and also our Relay C team were at the Dolphin against Eastbourne and Beacon, both of whom turned up with teams determined to do well.

Across all three teams we had 103 swimmers competing and wearing the Marlins Blue Hats with pride.  In fact across the three gala series 130 swimmers have competed for Marlins.  We are a club that is proud to offer both competition and development opportunities to a large number of highly talented swimmers.

Before we look at the results I just want to flag up that any successful sports team has of course great athletes and great coaches, but they also have an incredible engine of volunteers working hard to support their athletes and coaches.  Hosting two galas on the same evening is not an easy task.  It requires a lot of organisation and some amazing volunteers.  We would like to say an enormous thank you to our small army of volunteers whether that be dealing with refreshments, operating our AOE systems, recording the galas, team managing, event managing, running the door/raffle, running our social media feeds, officiating, organising our volunteers, organising our officials, announcing at our galas or supporting the teams poolside – to each and everyone of you, THANK YOU.

This means Mid Sussex Marlins B were crowned Division 2 Champions and so promoted to Division 1 for the 2020 season. Amazing swimming and a fantastic result.

What an incredible night and so well deserved. Marlins are now the Sussex League 2019 Division 1 and Division 2 champions, something that has never been done before and next year both our A and B teams will be competing in Division 1.

Following our magnificent results our Head Coach Steve, fresh from being awarded Coach of the Year at the Sussex ASA Awards (see attached photo), had the following to say.

“What an excellent night for the whole of Mid Sussex Marlins Swimming club. Our teams have gone from strength to strength and tonight we displayed excellent determination, resilience and team mentality which resulted in both our teams taking top spot in their respective Sussex leagues.

I would like to thank my coaching team and the club’s teachers who have all played  a massive part in our successes this season. It is a team effort and this has shone through this evening! My congratulations to our swimmers who thoroughly deserve these results and to all our volunteers and club officials who help make these nights happen! “

Thank you Steve. Can I also join Steve in thanking all of our wonderful coaches and teachers and congratulating our amazing swimmers – 130 across three rounds WOW!!!

Here is the full 2019 League positions for both Divisions as well as the Gala scores.

2019 League results

Now a few of the more eagle eyed may have spotted last night the lack of any Cups for either the Division 1 or 2 titles. We are currently locating said cups and once with us we will send out an invite to all 130 swimmers who competed across the three rounds to join, Les, our Chairman, Steve, our Head Coach, Nic, our Lead Development Coach as well as our Officials, Volunteers and club coaches to have an internal presentation and photo of all the amazing Marlins who helped make these amazing results happen. Date, time and info TBC.

For now well done Marlins. To our Swimmers, our Coaches and our Volunteers, you are all superstars.
