Four Marlins girls ; Ismey Hawley, Kathryn Gracie-Langrick, Bella Power and Ella Boyle were included for the SE Region team competing the ASA inter district tournament at Walsall last weekend.
Eight regions entered with each team playing 5 matches over the two days. In the group stage, South East beat the North West 8-6 then thrashed the Midlands 13-2. This was followed by a 3-3 draw against the South West and a 3-6 loss to the North East, which meant we finished 3rd in the group on goal difference. We then won our play off match 7-5 against Eastern Counties. Due to the vagaries of the rules, we ended up in 5th place despite losing only one match.
All four Marlins players took up playing water polo only a year or so ago and they all acquitted themselves with distinction in their first representation in a SE Regional team. Ismey, playing in goal, grew in confidence with each game, making some excellent saves and good distributions. Bella scored in two of the games and Kathryn and Ella both played well, retaining the ball effectively and covering in defence.
The team was coached by Marlins club coach Ewan Partridge, assisted by Marlins national league senior goalkeeper, Amy Styles, who were responsible for providing immediate and relevant feedback which to develop individual players matchplay skills through the tournament.
Many thanks to parents and other family members for transporting the girls to Walsall and for their vocal support on poolside.
Marlins club junior water polo sessions are held every Sunday evening at the Dolphin pool in Haywards Heath from 5.45-6.45 pm. We welcome new members from age 10 up with a good swim ability
