The British Swimming Championships took place in Glasgow at the Tolcross International swimming centre from the 16th-21st April. The April champs is the premier meet of the domestic calendar and acts as the qualifying meet for all major competitions, Senior and Junior, for that year.
Mid Sussex Marlins had three swimmers qualified across the week;
- Charlotte Johnson -200m fly
- Sophie Shaw – 200, 100, 50m back and 50m fly / 100m free.
- Sophie Maguire – 200, 100, 50m back.
Highlights of the meet included Sophie Shaw taking 1st place in the Junior 200m backstroke as well as second in the 100m backstroke both in personal best times. Sophie Maguire also made two transition finals and improved her placing and Pb times in both which also resulted in two new open club and open county records in the 100m and 200m backstroke. Charlotte Johnson also swam a pb time in her 200m fly event which was also an open club record!
Head coach Steve Murphy said “For us to come away from this event with best times in the girls main events as well as Sophie Shaw winning her junior final is a big step forward for the club. It is important the swimmers are able to take on board race feedback, look and analyse how they swum and then go forward to finals and make the necessary adaptations to improve performance. Our girls did this extremely well and stepped up when it mattered this week. This was a great experience for them and we can now move this on for them and all our swimmers heading into the next training cycle, regional, end of season meet and into the British summer champs which take place in July!”
Congratulations to Sophie, Sophie and Charlotte.
