Marlins’ own representative on SE National Youth Advisory Panel

A report from Fabienne Andre..

I’m excited to share with you that, in January 2019, I was appointed as a volunteer member of the Swim England National Youth Advisory Panel.  This is a panel of people who have been selected to ensure that young people have a voice within Swim England. I will be attending regular meetings following the Swim England Agenda, Swim England events and networking events through this role.
The first meeting of the year was held on Sunday 13th January.  I wasn’t able to attend the meeting in person due to other commitments but I joined via a Skype call to the meeting.   Key things that came from the meeting and things to watch out for include:
  • As part of the celebration of 150 years of Swim England a ‘Young Person’s Hall of Fame’, to highlight and showcase young people who have made a significant contribution to aquatics, will be launched. The details are being finalised but the first nominations are to be announced in April;
  • In addition, as part of 150 years celebration of Swim England, we are looking to bring in a ‘Youth Champion Award’ to recognise the work of young volunteers;
  • Discussions led by Diane Elliot, Swim England Talent Physiotherapy and Sports Science Coordinator focused on how best to raise awareness and promote positive mental wellbeing amongst young people within the swimming community. Watch out for campaigns coming to meets near you in the coming year;
  • There will be additional resources for all swimmers and aquatic disciplines to support spreading awareness and reduce the stigma of mental health issues by increasing discussion within sport and clubs.
Since the meeting all Panel members have completed Pen Profiles so you can all find out a little about the team, keep an eye out for them on social media and the Swim England website.
There are lots more useful resources for clubs and members that can be found on the Swim England website and social media platforms too.

I saw joining the panel as a great opportunity for not only my development in the sport but, more importantly, to ensure there is a representative for Para-swimmers and my club Mid Sussex Marlins.
I am very much looking forward to continuing the work with all the panel team members. The next meeting is to be held over the weekend of the 13th/ 14th April in Sheffield.
I look forward to updating the club following on from this meeting in April.
