Marlins under 14 team went one better than our men’s team and recorded not one – but two -victories in their first competition last Saturday. 23 March 2019 at Splashpoint can now be added to the list of illustrious sporting events, alongside the “Miracle” of Istanbul, Botham’s Ashes and the Revival at the Regent™.

Marlins were taking part in the first round of an inaugural Sussex junior league against 2 sides from Drenched water polo plus Worthing SC. It was the first time our boys and girls have played as a team and – wow!  – did they do Marlins proud. A scintillating victory over Drenched Boys (6-4) and a resounding 7-1 thrashing of Drenched Girls was followed by a 1-4 defeat to Worthing who were flattered by a couple of late goals and a missed Marlins penalty.

The names: Power, Skoda and Jespersen can now be mentioned in the same breath as other memorable forward lines of the past (Best, Charlton and Law may come to the mind of some of our more mature readers) as they terrorised the opposition defences with their speed and interplay.

However, this was an all-round team performance built on a solid defence: Kevin Halms and George Hughes were marshalled by Katherine “the Captain” Gracie-Langrick and backed up by a magnificent display of goalkeeping from Ismey Hawley. The Marlins squad was completed by Imogen Read and Oliver Goswamy whose gutsy performances belied the fact that it is only matter of weeks since they have taken up playing water polo.

After the first round of matches, Marlins sit handily placed in second in the table and can look forward with confidence to the next round on 13 April.
