Raising the Bar here at the Marlins but we need more volunteers !

Chairman John Mills and acting Head Coach Kevin Wright hosted a swimmer/parents evening on Monday evening at the Triangle aimed at the top squads.  Swapping the hot balcony for the garden area around 60 people gathered for an important session.  The main aim of the meeting was to deliver a message as to the short to medium future of the elite squads .

Kevin delivers his message to around 60 people

John opened up with thanks for coming to the event and then introduced Kevin Wright to the group who is currently acting as head coach while Beth is on sick leave. John explained ' Kevin is here with the full support of Beth and committee, we are very pleased with the start he has made with us.

Kevin then spoke for around 30 mins.  'Thank you for making me feel very welcome here at the Marlins, I am confident that we have a very solid future which we can all look forward to.  In order to get us to where we want to be we will be implementing some changes which hopefully will 'raise the bar' in terms of the competitive nature of this club.'

The list of changes are as follows and swimmers will start noticing these at the start of the Autumn season

1) There will be a setting of criteria level for each squad which swimmers will need to achieve, maintain and then improve on.  Performance will be strictly monitored.  Kevin said ' with out sacrificing technique I want my swimmers to secure faster times'

2)  I want to secure the services of more coaches so that each squad will have their own dedicated 'lead coach' .  This person will be responsible for owning the squad and development, turning out for all training sessions.   Kevin explained 'I will be having conversations with the committee in an attempt to get these people on board ASAP'

3)  Each squad will be represented by a lead girl and boy in open forums with the coaching staff.  Kevin added ' I believe it is important that we receive views from the swimmers perspective and all sensible topics can be discussed in open forum, please think about it over the summer and let me know if anyone would like to volunteer'

4)  There will be renewed and improved 'dry land' sessions for all squads.  These will include nutritional advice, gala preparation, stroke technique and exercises. He explained   ' these sessions will be very important to development and will be tacked on to existing sessions'

5) Yearly training plans will be pinned to the walls so that swimmers will be able plan their weekly schedule in advance.

6)  Going forward there will be yearly 'THEME' which should be a lot of fun for all.  Kevin is due to divulge the 2010/11 theme in September.   Watch out for that.

7)  Raising individual performances.   Each swimmer, in the squads, will be given a set of objectives for the year and they will be closely monitored.

8)  There will be a swimmer of the month award, as Kevin puts it 'for those who have gone beyond what is expected'

9)  Team performance.  As reported before Kevin was very disappointed with the recent Sussex League results.  He said ' we will be heavily focusing on the up coming National Swimming League.  My teams will be well prepared, know which events they will be swimming in advance and I will be picking the fastest swimmers for each event,

'WE WANT TO WIN GALAS' was the message but he does concede that we do have a huge task ahead of us to maintain our premier division status.

Kevin taking questions from the floor.

He concluded by thanking every one for attending and handed back to John to wrap up.

John summed up  'Kevin will be trying to secure more coaches and volunteers but we urge parents from all levels in the club to come forward  to help the Marlins progress, there are many differing and interesting roles on offer '
He finished by saying

'LETS MOVE ON !

John says ' Kevin has the full support of Beth and the committee'

In conclusion press officer Bowman sums up ' The Marlins have achieved many great things over the past 3 years and with the teaching groups, training groups and squads all in place we have the ingredients to become a powerhouse of swimming in the South East. Kevin looks to have the vision for turning that potential into a reality but has a very busy summer ahead of him while implementing these changes. I urge all parents to think about coming forward to donate some time to this swimming club, your assistance is crucial to the development of our young and talented swimmers.'
