‘Big Will’ selected for SE Region u18 Boys Water Polo

Many congratulations to Marlins “Big Will” Gracie-Langrick on being selected for the SE Region U18 boys’ water polo team which took part in the ASA Inter Region Championships at Ponds Forge, Sheffield over the weekend of 2-3 February.

Will has become a regular member of the Sussex and SE Region junior teams over recent years and was rewarded with yet another selection for the SE Region while still being a year under age for this competition.

The South East team made a magnificent start, registering 3 consecutive wins:  against the West Midlands(5-4), the North West(8-6) and most impressively Wales(10-4). Their best performance however was against an exceptionally strong Scotland team featuring several boys who are already playing regularly in the Men’s British Water Polo league. The SE boys pushed Scotland all the way before being shaded in the final quarter to lose 3-5. Unfortunately, the effort the SE boys put into this game left them exhausted and they lost their final play-off match to the North West, whom they had beaten the previous day.

Nevertheless, coach Alastair Roberts (Worthing SC) was delighted with the team’s performance. Two years ago the SE squad managed only a single victory in the equivalent under 16 competition, so to record 3 victories this time was a sign of the improvement that the players have achieved. Only 2 boys are top of age group so the majority of this squad – including Will, are still eligible next year.
