Once again, there was much fun and excitement at the eleventh Mid Sussex Marlins Disability Swimming Gala at The Triangle in Burgess Hill. The event was generously supported by Marlins and Places for People. Friendly competition between five clubs led to some amazingly close finishes!
The large home team of 25 swimmers were delighted to gain a hoard of medals and personal best times (PBs). Richard Sambrook and Simon Tomlinson both came first in all their races and were jointly rewarded with the Top Senior Boys’ trophy. Simon also achieved huge PB’s in all his events, as did Olly Challis, Sam Gardiner, Alex Holman, Sam Loft, Louis Moyes and Lee Potter. Kate Bentley was once again a clear winner in her four races, and thereby retained the top Senior Girls’ trophy. The Top Junior Boy’s trophy was jointly won by Matthew McMillan and Marcus Harvey (Sussex Squids). Lauren Huggett, competing for the first time in a few years, was awarded the Girls Special Achievement prize.
Completing the team were Alfie Penfold, Domenico Capaldi-Drewett, David Fawdrey, Reece Meyer, Adele Endean, Tom Giles, Josh Savva, Steven Bayliss, Pat Hough, Annie Lacey, Peter McCleery and John Viccari, all of whom had a least one PB. Overcoming nerves, swimming in their first competition, Rebecca Collier and Thomas Clarry achieved good times, and more helpful points for the team.
The mixed 4×1 freestyle relay trophy was once again won by the Marlins squad of Alfie Penfold, Kate Bentley, David Fawdrey and Richard Sambrook; and Marlins swimmers, Alfie Penfold, Richard Sambrook and Kate Bentley also retained the mixed 3×1 medley relay trophy.
When all the points were averaged out, Bexhill won the Top Team trophy, Sussex Squids came second, closely followed by Mid Sussex Marlins, Leatherhead Swans and Sunbeam SC.
A big thank you to the volunteers and congratulations to all the swimmers!
